Choosing a Knotweed Specialist: What to Look For
Knotweed contracting in London is unregulated. Anyone with a sprayer can call themselves a specialist, and the difference between a competent contractor and a chancer can cost a homeowner tens of thousands of pounds. These five checks will protect you.
1. Insurance-Backed Guarantee Provider
Ask which insurer underwrites the warranty. Recognised providers include the Property Care Association's TrustMark scheme. If the contractor cannot name an insurer, walk away.
2. Methodology in Writing
The quote should specify herbicide active ingredient, application method (foliar spray vs stem injection), visit schedule and total programme duration.
3. Waste Disposal Documentation
If excavation is involved, ask for the waste carrier licence number and the receiving landfill site reference. Both must appear on the Duty of Care transfer note.
4. Local Track Record
Ask for two references from completed jobs in your borough within the last 24 months. London-experienced contractors should have no difficulty providing them.
5. Honest Method Comparison
A trustworthy contractor will quote both herbicide and excavation options where appropriate and explain the trade-offs. Single-option quotes that push only excavation are a red flag, excavation is often unnecessary.
Warning Signs
Cash-only payment, no written contract, no guarantee provider named, pressure-selling on the day of survey, refusal to answer methodology questions. Any of these means walk away.
